Compensation for Nurse Assaulted by Patient
Ms H worked as a psychiatric nurse, dealing with people who had severe learning difficulties and mental illnesses, including dementia and late-stage Alzheimer's disease. One day she was physically assaulted by a female patient, suffering a broken thumb, two dislocated fingers and a black eye in the incident.
There were no other members of staff present, as the medical orderly normally in attendance was answering a phone call out of ear-shot at the time. Ms H was forced to take 2 weeks off work, and did not regain full mobility in her hand until 3 months later. She was also emotionally traumatised by the incident, and aggrieved that no one had come to her assistance during the attack.
