Burn Injury Compensation Awards

When placing a value on facial scarring we have to look at a number of factors, but especially the age and sex of the person scarred. Burn injuries are particularly painful and disfiguring, and awards for burn injuries are always towards the upper end of each bracket. In the case of severe facial scarring in a relatively young woman, compensation awards will be between £31,000 and £62,000. Where the scarring does not markedly affect the appearance in a young woman awards will vary between £2,500 and £8,750.

For males under the age of 30, very severe facial scarring will result in compensation awards between £19,000 and £42,000. Where the scarring is less significant and only visible on close inspection compensation will vary between £2,500 and £5,850. Awards are less for males and females where the scarring is on other parts of the body, such as the legs, arms, hands, back or chest. Most of these fall into the £4,750 to £9,000 bracket for a number of noticeable, or a single disfiguring scar.

SITUATION: Mr G was working as a kitchen assistant and was carrying a plastic container of hot custard in a towel. As he was carrying the container the custard came into contact with his hands and arms and caused him burn injuries and scars.

RESULT: Mr G contacted Bartletts Solicitors and asked; can I claim compensation for a burn accident at work? We explained how he could claim compensation for his injuries and allocated his claim to a specialist personal injury solicitor at no cost and no risk to himself. The employer had not risk assessed the job and had not provided adequate equipment. The employer admitted liability for the accident. Mr G received £3,000 for his injury after being examined by a General Practitioner who specialises in burn injuries.
SITUATION: Miss T sustained a chemical burn to her hand in the course of her job as a hairdresser. She was employed to mix hair colouring chemicals. During her first week at work she spilt some mixture onto her hand. This resulted in Miss T having a scar for life to her hand. Her employer had not given her the appropriate safety training and this lack of training had caused her injury.

RESULT: Miss T contacted our company and asked; how can I claim compensation from my employer for a burn injury? One of our lawyers with experience of burn injury compensation claims answered all her questions and she instructed our company on a no win no fee basis. Liability for the accident was admitted by her employers insurers. We successfully recovered £7,400 on behalf of Miss T.
