Compensation for Third Degree Burns at Work
Mr S was working on a building site, excavating the foundations, when his hands came into contact with a buried power line, giving him an electric shock which threw him five feet backwards. Though he was not in much pain following the accident, his supervisor called an ambulance, and Mr S was taken to the burns unit of a local hospital. There doctors founds that nerves and soft tissues in the skin on his right arm were damaged (this was the reason why he did not feel any immediate pain).
Mr S had in fact sustained third degree burns, and was kept in hospital for 4 days following the accident, so doctors could monitor possible damage to his internal organs. Though his injuries were not as severe as they could have been, Mr S lost the use of his right arm for over a month, and his skin became white and discoloured. He continues to experience partial loss of feeling and lack of mobility in the joint.
