  • Other Common Causes of Lorry Accidents
With tens of thousands of lorries and trucks operating on UK roads every day, accidents involving heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are common occurrences, with research indicating that HGVs are five times more likely to be involved in serious accidents on minor roads than other traffic, and are involved in over half of motorway accidents that result in fatalities. Given Merseyside’s status as a major freight and logistics hub, Liverpool roads have some of the heaviest HGV traffic in the UK, and consequently a high incidence of road traffic accidents involving lorries and trucks.
The size and weight of HGVs (lorries can be twenty to thirty times heavier than passenger vehicles) means that they will almost always cause more damage to smaller vehicles in the event of a collision. Lorries and trucks are generally far larger than any other vehicles on the road, and are also often inherently unstable, particularly in high winds when drivers can find it difficult to control an HGV’s long trailer. Other motorists face the risk of lorries overturning in such conditions, or a trailer swinging out across the road when an HGV brakes (also known as jackknifing) and colliding with oncoming traffic.
Other common causes of road traffic accidents involving lorries include tailgating, when a passenger vehicle is following too closely behind a lorry when it brakes suddenly, causing in a collision. In other circumstances, an HGV’s trailer load may not be properly secured or the trailer may be overloaded, resulting in instability and the vehicle shedding its cargo into the path of other road users. Human error may also be to blame, such as when a lorry driver is overtired due to a lack of adequate breaks (a frequent cause of accidents involving lorries), using a mobile phone while at the wheel, or driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
