Compensation for Nurse Injured Lifting at Work
Ms G was employed at a nursing home as a care worker, dealing with largely immobile patients. Her role involved routine Australian lifting, where two persons on either side of a patient lift them into a sitting position on their beds. Despite being new to nursing, Ms G was not offered any training in how to lift and move patients safely.
Over a period of 6 months she began to experience constant pain in her lower back, a condition which her GP later diagnosed as sciatica. Ms G subsequently left her job, due to her inability to cope with the physical demands it placed on her. She continues to suffer from sciatica, and has difficulty lifting and carrying both her young children, and even shopping bags. She is currently out of work as a direct result of her condition.
